The victory of righteousness is enduring. Therefore, one should avoid character assassination and instead strive to build character. Character assassination is not merely the defamation of an individual; it causes immense harm to trust, relationships, social harmony, and virtuous values. Thus, in such situations, if one must offer counsel, it should be to uphold truth with wisdom and restraint, not to seek revenge.
One must steadfastly adhere to the truth. Instead of reacting to false accusations, rumors, or malicious propaganda in the heat of the moment, one should ascertain the truth and stand firm on the facts.
It is important to realize the immense value of character—whether it belongs to an individual, a society, or a nation. It takes years to build a reputation and good name, yet mere moments to destroy them. Therefore, one should think a hundred times before making baseless or false accusations against anyone.
Once a word is spoken or a message is circulated, it cannot be retracted. Hence, one must exercise restraint over one’s words and emotions. In particular, before forwarding any content that defames someone on digital platforms, one should verify its authenticity and proceed only if convinced of its truth; otherwise, it should not be shared.
Cultivate an attitude that cherishes righteousness. Even if the other person is behaving wrongly, one should not stoop to their level. It is crucial to maintain the wisdom to ensure that the faults of others do not erode one’s own virtues.
One must understand the vast difference between forgiveness and weakness. Injustice should not be tolerated; however, while standing up for justice, one must not allow feelings of hatred, vengeance, or personal animosity to take root in the mind. A society that relies on hearsay and spreads it without verification indirectly contributes to character assassination. Therefore, it is essential to shed the mindset that “what is heard must be true.”
One must bear in mind the timeless truth that no one truly rises in stature by assassinating another’s character, nor can one build one’s own reputation by destroying another’s integrity or causing them humiliation. Hence, one should verify the facts before making accusations against someone. Prudence should guide one’s speech. Before passing on something heard without verification, one should consider the consequences; for the defamation of an individual is not merely a personal matter—it hurts families, strains relationships, erodes trust, and taints the wholesome atmosphere of society.
One should oppose injustice, but not with hatred. One should resist falsehood, but not by resorting to lies oneself. Even if one’s own character comes under attack, one should not abandon one’s own integrity and virtue. Ultimately, a person’s true identity is not defined by the accusations leveled against them, but by their conduct, restraint, commitment to truth, and a character that withstands the test of time.
